The Pacific Aikido Story

Aikikai Registered • Est. 1991 (British School in Tokyo) • Family-run • Bilingual Instructors

Pacific Aikido is led by Chief Instructor Paul Neuman, a 6th-degree black belt from Vancouver with 40 years in Aikido and over 30 years of teaching. Together with his wife, Tamayo, he runs a family-led program supported by an exceptional team of instructors each with decades of experience. The result is a community grounded in hard work, respect, and making life-long friends from training in Aikido.

Pacific Aikido began in 1991 at the British School in Tokyo, founded by Tony Hind Sensei, Chief Instructor of the Canadian Aikido Association. His pioneering after-school model still shapes how we teach and support families today.

Highlights from Past Events and Trainings

The hallmark of Pacific Aikido’s classes is a balance of discipline and fun, both of which are equally important. Students begin by learning respect—for the dojo, instructors, and each other. Training with partners, not opponents, develops self-control, focus, and teamwork. Through drills, games, and practice, children gain confidence in a safe, supportive environment that encourages both physical and emotional growth.

What is Aikido?

Aikido is a Japanese martial art without tournaments of any kind. Aikido does not rely on defeating another person in order to get better, rather it stresses working together with your partner so that both can improve. This is one of the fundamental differences between Aikido and other martial arts. Also…Aikido is really fun!!!

Is your dojo registered somewhere?

Yes. All dojos in the Pacific Aikido group are officially registered with the Aikikai Foundation- Aikido World Headquarters

Which class should I sign up for?

Please sign up for your first choice of classes, the one that best fits your schedule. If the class you have registered for is not appropriate, Pacific Aikido will contact you to suggest another option.

How does testing work?

Testing takes place every term for those students that have acquired the minimum number of hours for a particular rank. Those increase slightly with each rank from 9th kyu to 1st kyu. Students that pass testing receive a new coloured belt (depending on rank) and a certificate issued by the World Headquarters.

Are all locations open to any students?
Students of each school have priority to join our classes. Once registration is completed if there are still places available in the classes, students from other schools are welcome to join. Sacred Heart is only open to students from the school. The Tokyo American Club (TAC) is a private club and classes there are open to TAC members only.
